HOW WE TEST FOR AN ENGINE OVERHEAT CONDITION
To properly inspect, evaluate and repair any engine overheat concerns, our technicians perform a series of tests and inspection procedures. The cost of any repairs due to overheating may vary depending on vehicle make and model, age of vehicle and the environment in which it is operated in. We’ve included a list of tests and inspections that our technicians may perform. Not all procedures are always required to confirm the engine overheat problem.
Our List Of Testing Procedures
A test drive if possible is performed to verify customer complaint.
Test coolant PH and level.
Pressure test system. (we pressurize entire system with 13 PSI and check for leaks)
Temperature drop test. (a heat gun is used to determine radiator blockage)
Radiator flow test to check for restricted tubes in the radiator.
Block test. (this determines if exhaust gases are intruding into the cooling system from the engine, this checks for a head gasket issue)
Hydrocarbon test. (this also tests for a head gasket issue by looking for high hydrocarbon reading in the cooling system)
Exhaust back pressure test. (a restricted exhaust will cause overheating)
Test computer system for codes with the laptop computer.
Record and analyze freeze frame data.
Test fan clutch operation if equipped.
Test electric fan operation if equipped. (the car has one or the other)
Inspect engine oil for signs of water intrusion.
Test and inspect heater controls and operation.
